Katy Perry was born to Pentecostal pastors Maurice Keith Hudson (born 1947) and Mary Christine Perry (born 1947). Her parents are born again Christians, each having turned to God after a "wild youth". Katy Perry has a younger brother named David (born 1988), and an older sister, Angela (born 1982). Katheryn Elizabeth Hudson attended religious schools and camps, including Paradise Valley Christian School in Arizona and Santa Barbara Christian School in California during her elementary years. She took dancing lessons and learned how to swing, Lindy Hop, and jitterbug.
