Jessica Chastain the daughter of Jerri Renée (née Chastain), a vegan chef and Michael Edward Monasterio (1957–2013), a musician. After her parents separated, she was raised by her mother and stepfather, Michael Leroy Hastey.
Jessica Chastain studied at El Camino High School in Sacramento. With too many absences during her senior year in 1995, she did not qualify for graduation but eventually obtained an "adult diploma". Jessica Chastain later attended Sacramento City College, where she was a member of the debate team (1996–97).
